Kavana Training and Techniques
At Kavana Spa we combine a variety of techniques to achieve healing, release tension and promote relaxation

Swedish/ Relaxation Massage- This style utilizes long, flowing strokes, often but not necessarily in the direction of the heart. Swedish massage is designed to increase circulation and blood flow and to induce relaxation.

Deep Tissue- Deep tissue techniques are generally designed for focused massage work, to alleviate pain due to injuries, repetetive use and stress.

At Kavana Spa Deep Tissue is not synonymous with deep pain. Anyone can experience deep tissue work, even children and the elderly. Since each person experiences pressure differently our deep tissue technique starts superficially and slowly eases into the depth of the muscle allowing for increased mobility and greater range of motion. We believe that if the pressure is applied too deeply or too quickly, the muscle may tighten to protect that area and unnecessary damage or inflamation can occur.

Myofacial Release- refers to the manual technique for stretching the fascia with the aim to balance the body. Injuries, stress, trauma, and poor posture can cause restriction to fascia. The goal of myofascial release is to release fascia restriction and restore its tissue.

Thai- Known in Thailand as "nuat phaen boran", and in English also as Thai classical massage, passive yoga, or assisted yoga. Its emphasis is on stretching and loosening the body. Its roots go back far into history, originating in India based on the Ayurveda, and then becoming popular in Thailand.

Hot Stone- Massage in which hot or cold stones, usually basalt or marble, are used to massage the body.

Lymphatic Drainage- Utilize effleurage, a gentle stroking technique to improve the movement of lymph throughout the body. Excellent for people with edema due to pregnancy, cancer treatment and surgery.

Reflexology– Is a therapeutic form of foot massage. According to the Chinese each spot on the sole of the foot corresponds to an internal organ, and the applied therapy is healing to one's overall well being. The theory supposes that an ailment of an internal organ will be associated with the nerve ending on the sole of the foot. Foot Reflexology theory holds that a healthy patient should not feel any strong pain. Painful spots, reflexologists believe, reflect illnesses of other parts of the body. The practitioner rubs and massages the painful spots to break down accumulated crystals and increase circulation. Regardless of the actual correlation of reflexology to internal organs, many enjoy it for the mix of stimulation and relaxation.

Trigger Point Therapy- A trigger point is an area of a muscle that refers pain sensations to other parts of the body. Trigger Point Therapy applies pressure to these points leading to immediate release of tension and improved muscular functioning. This work is based upon the trigger point research and manuals of Dr. Janet Travell.

Pregnancy- Massage is performed in a side lying position with pillows to support the body in a comfortable position. The mother-to-be is carefully massaged to allow her to feel deep relaxation and to alleviate many of the discomforts associated with pregnancy including lower back pain, swelling and stress.
